Known under brand name Avodart, Dutasteride was developed for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), better known as enlarged prostate. It is similar to Finasteride (Proscar), but has proven to be more effective in clinical trials in treating enlarged prostate and hair loss. While Proscar treats type I 5-alpha reductase, Dutasteride treats both type I and type II of 5-alpha reductase.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition that affects men over the age of 50, causing enlargement of the prostate gland. This enlargement of the prostate gland, which is located near the bladder, squeezes the urine tube, making it more difficult to pass urine. This is brought about by 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which converts testosterone into di-hydro-testosterone (DHT), causing enlargement of the prostate. Dutasteride inhibits this enzyme, thus reducing the chances of enlarged prostate. Likewise, Dutasteride also acts fast against hair loss, which is also caused by increased DHT.

Dutasteride dosage:
The usual dosage is one capsule, once a day, swallowed with water - do not chew. Can be taken with or without food. Some male patients show early improvements in symptoms, but Avodart or Dutasteride should be taken for up to six months to see if it helps.
