Protects the male prostate and help reduce male pattern baldness

Also known as Finasteride, Proscar belongs to a group of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. By inhibiting 5-alpha reductase, Proscar reduces levels of DHT (di-hydro-testosterone). High levels of DHT are believed to be a contributing factor in the enlargement of the male prostate. This enlargement affects men over the age of 55 and can lead to prostate cancer.

High DHT levels can also be a contributing factor in the development of male pattern baldness, as well as the increased growth of body hair. Regular use of Proscar has been shown to reduce male pattern baldness and slow growth of body hair.

There are two types of enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT (di-hydro-testosterone) - type I and type II. Proscar blocks more common type II 5-alpha reductase, which makes it about 70% effective. There is however new 5-alpha reductase inhibitor Dutasteride that blocks both type I and type II, which makes it 90% effective in its action in treating enlarged male prostate and hair loss.

Proscar dosage:
To decrease the size of male prostate, usual dosage is about 5mg, or one tablet daily. For hair loss or alopecia, the dosage is 1-2 mg of Proscar daily.

SIDE EFFECTS: Finasteride or Proscar side effects are very uncommon, although worth noting. Some men may experience change in their sex lives when taking Proscar, such as decreased sex drive, or even impotence. Reduced semen release may also be experienced by some men, which doesn't affect normal sexual function. These side effects tend to disappear with some men, even when Proscar's use is continued. Rarely, some men report breast swelling and/or tenderness, and rash. If you exeperience any of these or other unusual symptoms while taking Proscar, see your doctor promptly.

CAUTION: Finasteride or Proscar is for use by men only. Women should not ingest Finasteride, as this can affect unborn male child. Furthermore, it's also recommended that during intercourse, condom is worn, to prevent Finasteride entering the womb via semen.
