For the prevention and treatment of influenza

Relenza is one of only two neuraminidase inhibitors currently available (the other one is Tamiflu). These are potent antiviral drugs because they selectively block the viral surface of the enzyme neuraminidase, thus preventing the release of virus particles from infected cells.

Relenza contains Zanamivir, which has been developed by GlaxoSmithKline for the prevention and treatment of influenzas. Zanamivir is one of the two drugs licensed to use against swine flu. Along with Tamiflu, Relenza is also a drug of choice to fight Bird Flu. There's no known resistance to Relenza's action against influenza A and B viral neuraminidase, which is why it's used for Bird Flu.

How to use Relenza
The product comes packaged in blister on diskettes, along with diskhaler.
1. Load the medication disk into the diskhaler.
2. Puncture one medication blister.
3. Keep diskhaler level so that medication will not spill.
4. Breathe out through the mouth, put the mouthpiece into your mouth and breathe in deeply.

Hold your breath for a few seconds, for the medication to stay in your lungs. If you have been instructed by your doctor to inhale Relenza a second time, take another medication blister and repeat the process.

Relenza dosage:
For the treatment of influenza symptoms, inhale Relenza through the mouth. Inhaler is supplied with the product. Take two inhalations (5mg each), twice daily, 12 hours apart, for 5 days, or as directed by your doctor.

For prevention, take one Relenza inhalation once daily, if there's a known outbreak of influenza in your area. Continue for 5 days, or longer if influenza threat hasn't passed. Detailed Relenza dosage instructions come with the product.
